Hi Everyone,

Today we started our new reading/writing units. We are focusing on inventors and entrepreneurs. Today we discussed what it means to invent something, patents, and what it means to be an entrepreneur. We then watched an episode of ABC’s hit show, Shark Tank! The episode we watched was with Stamford’s own Ryan Kelly! Ryan Kelly is now in 7th grade in Stamford but was a student of Casey Cummings at Westover school when he appeared on the show. Ryan will be coming to Springdale on Tuesday after vacation to talk to our 5th graders about his invention and the process he had to go through to do it. Please see the link below to view his website and watch his Shark Tank Episode.

Figurative Langauge

Hi Everyone,

Today we focused on figurative language in our reading and writing. We discussed similes, metaphors, hyperboles, personification, alliteration, idioms, onomatopoeia, and allusion. We worked on finding examples in text as well as writing our own. Students were to find their own in their independent reading books. Please discuss this with your child at home.

Math test for unit 8 will be on Friday.

Please see the picture below of our lucky raffle winners! I have been doing a lot of reading these days! After reading the books, I have been raffling them off to the students for them to read. The 6 boys below were the first winners of our new raffle round ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy Reading!

Hi Everyone,

At the beginning of our Roald Dahl book unit, I showed students book trailers. These were trailers that I found on YouTube. I thought that it would be fun for our students to create their own trailers now and show my students at the beginning of this unit next year! We went to the computer lab today and students started to make their own trailers using Animoto. Animoto is a cloud-based video creation service that produces video from photos, video clips, and music into video slideshows. Please see the link below that explains how animoto can be used in classroom settings. This will be done in school but I am allowing students to explore with this at home as well using my username and password that I gave them in class.
