The Global Read Aloud

Hi Everyone,

Students in 208 will be participating in The Global Read Aloud which starts Monday, October 5th. We will be reading Fish in a Tree. We will be conecting with 2 classes in Canada and one in New York. Please see video below which gives us a better understanding of how AMAZING the global read aloud is for our students.

The premise is simple; we pick a book to read aloud to our students during a set 6-week period and during that time we try to make as many global connections as possible. Each teacher decides how much time they would like to dedicate and how involved they would like to be. Some people choose to connect with just one class, while others go for as many as possible. The scope and depth of the project is up to you. In the past we have used Twitter, Skype, Edmodo, our wiki, email, regular mail, Kidblog, Tackk, and any other tools we can think of to make these connections. Teachers get a community of other educators to do a global project with, hopefully inspiring them to continue these connections through the year.

Cause and Effect using Google Slides

Hi Everyone,

In social studies, students are working on making google slides on the causes and effects of the French and Indian War and Line of Proclamation. Google slides are a great away to present their work. The shared presentation doesn’t have to stay in the confines of our classroom. Google slides allows us to view our presentation at home, share with other students, etc. It allows us to have real time collaboration.

French and Indian War/Line of Proclamation

Hi Everyone,

Today in social studies we focused on the causes and effects of the French and Indian War and the Line of Proclamation. The students have been reading and discussing these two topics over the past week and are ready start presenting what they have learned. Students began creating Google Slides which they will then present to the class. Please see the picture below.

Theme of a Story

Hi Everyone,

Today in literacy we discussed how we find the theme of the story. Please see chart below that we used as our “2nd teacher” to help us with theme. The book we read was “Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun.” This book helps us deal with difficult times we may encounter with our peers. It helps us consider our options, and remember to be kind  regardless of how others are treating you.


Students then broke off into pairs and created a poster which displayed the theme of the story and why. Please see pictures below.

Tone and Mood

Today in literacy, we talked about the difference between tone and mood in a story. Tone is the way feelings are expressed (the author’s attitude towards the writing.) Mood is the overall feeling of the piece. (The feeling you get from the reading.)

To hook the students, I showed them 2 different movie trailers…both for Mary Poppins. The students were able to see how the different TONES in the trailer change their moods. Click the link below to watch the videos.

We also did the same with music. Students listened to “Happy” by Pharrell then the theme song from the Show 24. They wrote down the mood each song was putting them in. Please see pictures below of students listening to the music with their eyes closed.

I then read “Come On Rain” aloud to the students. The students discussed how the mood changed throughout the story because the author’s TONE changed. Please listen to the story below.
