Non Fiction Unit

Hi Everyone,

We are now into our non fiction unit. We will be focusing on

  • text features
  • text structures
  • summarizing
  • persuading
  • main idea

Today we had a non fiction text feature scavenger hunt! Students had to scan QR codes that brought them to a text feature. They then had to complete the t shirt and fill out what the text feature they were working on was and where they found that text feature in their non fiction text. There were books everyone, kids were running, they were yelling, and having so much fun. Learning was loud today in our classroom but worth it. Hour of Code

Figurative Language

Hi Everyone,

A huge part of literacy in fifth grade is figurative language. We have been working on adding figurative language to our realistic fiction stories, our word of the week stories, as well as into our everyday writing. The students have had a lot of fun learning about each. If students identify figurative language in their independent reading book, they are able to add it our figurative language wall. Please see picture below.


Below are examples of figurative language we are learning and using in class. Please discuss this with your children at home.




Summarizing Fictional Stories

Hi Everyone,

We are working on writing summaries in literacy class. We are using the format “somebody wanted but so then” to practice. Students have written a summary on our class read aloud titled “The Distance to Home.”

After they wrote their summaries, they typed them into a website called Animoto and added pictures and music to go along with it.

Please ask your students about this at home. They’ve been working vert hard on them!

Verb Tenses

Hi Everyone,

As we continue to work on our realistic fiction writing pieces, I am finding that students are confusing their verb tenses. They are not consistent with their tenses throughout the story. We will be working on this in class to help us. Please see some activities below that we will be working on. Also, be sure to talk to them about this at home.

Social Studies Project

Hi Everyone,

We have been working on the Northeast and Southeast Regions in social studies. Instead of giving the students a quiz, they will be able to show me what they know through a project. The students will have to compare and contrast the two regions, focusing on housing, food, geography, and climate. Instead of assigning them the project, they get to choose what type of project they would like to do. All projects will be completed in class.

The projects they can choose from are as follows:

  1. Poster: Decorate your poster in any way you would like. You must include a paragraph on geography, food, homes, and interesting facts for each region. Spelling and punctuation counts. Once the writing is done, you may add pictures, drawings, etc.

2.) Green Screen Video: Write a paragraph on geography, food, homes, and interesting facts for each region. Come up with background images for your video. Speak loud and clear!!!! Spelling and punctuation counts!

3.) Google Slide: Create a slideshow similar to a powerpoint but BETTER! Write a paragraph on geography, food, homes, and interesting facts for each region and add into the slides. Then search for pictures to go with each. Spelling and punctuation counts!!!

4.) Seesaw video & Kahoot: Write a paragraph on geography, food, homes, and interesting facts for each region. Read your paragraphs into the seesaw video. Then create 10 questions on Kahoot for the class so we can play. The kahoot must have pictures.  Spelling and punctuation counts!

Realistic Fiction Stories/Summarizing

Hi Everyone,

We have come to the end of our realistic fiction unit. Students have started working on writing a realistic fiction story of their own. They are in the beginning stages of it but are doing a great job.

At the same time, we are also learning to summarize a FICTIONAL story. Summarizing fiction and non fiction look very different. While it is important to know how to summarize both, we are working on summarizing fiction right now. Please see the chart below that we are using in class to help us with our writing.

Problem and Solution

For the last part of our realistic fiction unit, students will be learning about problem and solution.

Problem: something that is causing trouble or harm that needs to be solved.

Solution: How the problem is solved.

Students will be looking at the following pictures and responding as to what the problem and the solution is. I will be looking for correct answers but also complete sentences, spelling, and punctuation.
