Context Clues

Hi Everyone,

When I  meet with students in small groups, each group is typically reading a different text, or the same text but at a different lexile level to best meet our students needs. Because of this, each group will have different vocabulary to focus on. I have made this chart to help us learn vocabulary in our small groups. We must use our context clues to help us understand what a word means when we cannot look it up in a dictionary. Please see the chart below. Thanks!

International Day of the Girl

Yesterday was international day of the girl! Today I read to the class the book titled “She Persisted.” This book discusses the power of a girl and focuses on 13 American women who changed the world. The women we discussed were

In our read aloud, Wonder, the teacher in the story has a different precept for each month of school. A precept is similar to a motto. Its a general rule to help guide our behaviors and thoughts. In the story, the students September precept is “When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind.” We discussed what it meant and how we can show that in the classroom.

We as a class came up with the precept “Don’t judge a book by its cover” as our first precept. We watched the video below to help us understand what this means but to also appreciate what we have. Please ask your children about this at home.

Resources to help identify Character Traits

Hi Everyone,

In small groups, I will be using a chapter from our class read aloud Wonder to identify character traits. We will be using the resources below to help us. The F.A.S.T acronym will be used consistently throughout the year. Please use this when or if  you are discussing character traits with your child at home.

Character Traits

Hi Everyone,

So far this year the students have learned about theme & what it means to infer. We have now moved onto inferring character traits. The students have been working on task cards during stations to identify the characters trait. It is important that they tell me how they know what the trait is using evidence from the text. Without the evidence, the answer will not get credit. Please see the task cards below & check this out on their google classroom account!

While working on the task cards independently, I am working with the students in small groups on inferring character traits. In the small groups, I have students reading a text that is one level above their current DRA/LEXILE level. With the support from me, the students are able to read the text and infer character traits by finding evidence from the text. The goal is to have the students eventually reading independently at this level.

Lastly, students are drawing out pictures of them using words to describe their inside and outside traits. Please ask your children about this at home.

Inferring Crime Scene

Hi Everyone,

Today we worked on an activity where the kids had to investigate the crime scene. I told the kids that our classes chromebooks were stolen. They would have to use their background knowledge as well as what they are observing to infer and solve the crime. Please see the fake police report and evidence that the students used below. Inferring through pictures and text

Hi Everyone,

We are still working on the concept of inferring. We are tackling it through a scaffold approach. Students first practiced inferring through pictures. They had to use their background knowledge, plus what they observe in the picture, to make an inference.  After they mastered the picture inferences, they move onto short passages. The students will eventually be able to make inferences while reading chapter books and articles. Please see an example of what we are working on in class below. Students responses should be “I can infer that mom lit the candles because the power went out. I know this because in the text it states that the wind was blowing. The power goes out when there is a storm and its windy.”

Hi Everyone,

The two concepts we have learned about in reading so far are theme and inferring. We learned that the theme of the story is the lesson or message the author wants you to learn. We learned that inferring means to “read between the lines.” We learned that sometimes the author does not always say exactly how the characters feel. We have to infer based off of the characters actions. We read the book Jabari Jumps together as a class. We talked about how although the author never quite states that Jabari is scared to jump off of the diving board, we inferred that he was scared based off his actions. In stations, the kids have been practicing inferring based off of pictures they see. See our example below. Please be sure to check your child’s google classroom to see their work and my comments.

Reading Stations

Hi Everyone,

Today we started our reading stations. The kids task were to complete the assignment on google classroom, independently read, work with me, and work on Wonder pre-reading activity.  We are so excited to begin our first chapter book read aloud. Wonder, by R.J. Palacio is about a boy who was born with a facial difference that prevented him from going to mainstream school. Please see the trailer below. The students will be going on a field trip in December to see the movie.
